TACL BOARD

The TACL Board consists of 11 members, eight of which (including the President) are elected at the AGM for a period of 2 years. Four members are elected each year.

Each of the Divers, Quota Unit Holders and Processors groups have a Subcouncil which elects a representitive to serve on the Board, again for a period of 2 years.

Each year, the Board establishes subcommittties to oversee various activities and responsibilities. At present, there are three sub-committees, covering Fisheries, Project Management and Administration (which oversees Finance, Governance, Risk and Office Management).

Dean Lisson

Dean is the Managing Director of his own commercial fishing company (est. 1986) and has been a commercial abalone diver and abalone quota owner in the Tasmanian abalone fishery for nearly 4 decades.

As a long-term advocate for the abalone industry, Dean has a broad knowledge of matters related to the Australian and global abalone industry and has developed an extensive network within Australia’s commercial abalone sector. Dean has over 30 years of experience managing and/or overseeing national and international abalone-related research and development projects.

Dean was previously President of the Tasmanian Abalone Council (TACL) from 1994 to 2007 and CEO from 2007 to 2020. He was awarded Life membership of the TACL in 2004.

Dean is currently CEO of Abalone Council Australia Ltd (www.abalonecouncil.com.au), is a Non-Executive Director of Abalone Council of New South Wales Ltd and a Member of the Longreach Maris Investment Advisory Committee (www.longreachmaris.com.au). He holds an MBA from UTAS.

Julene Jones

Julene and her family have been members of the Tasmanian Abalone Industry continuously for 40 years. Julene has been a quota holder for 20 years, and her 2 brothers-in-law are current owner-operators of dive entitlements.

Julene has undertaken operational and strategic roles with Federal Group Tasmania for the past 25 years, including in business development and strategic marketing. Her skills include the ability to work with a variety of people and organisations across a broad spectrum. She is used to working within a legislative framework and is familiar with dealing with legislation as it affects the industry.

Julene has completed a Certificate IV in Business Operations at Catalyst development (2006), a Post Graduate Certificate in Business at the University of Tasmania (2013) and an m.MBA in Marketing with Mark Ritson U.K. ePlatform (2021).

Having grown up in and around the fishery and with an extensive network of family, friends, and colleagues in Tasmania and interstate, Julene has always taken a special interest in the stewardship of the Industry.

Alan Gray

Alan has been involved in the abalone industry since 1988, his diving career spanned from 1994 to 2013. Abalone quota owner; Director of Shelly Point Seafish Pty Ltd; Director of F I Management Pty Ltd (broker, consultancy, valuation and investment company). Diesel engineer. Graduate - Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Alan was elected to the Board of the Tasmanian Abalone Council from 1996-2019, and again in 2020 to present; Chairman of the Divers Sub-Council 1997-1998, Chairman of the Quota Holder Sub-Council 2013-2019.

Alan chairs the TACL’s HR committee, is a member of the Stock Assessment Forum, a past member of Abalone Fishery Advisory Committee (AbFAC) and Fishery Resources Advisory Group (FRAG).

Alan was awarded Life Membership of TACL in 2018.

Sue Forward

Sue has been involved in the Tasmanian Abalone Industry since the mid 1980s.

Since retiring from full time employment in December 2015, Sue has been more actively participating in the Tasmanian Abalone Council Limited. She was elected Chairperson of the Quota Holder Sub-Council in September, 2019, as position she held for two years.

Sue was appointed to AbFAC (Abalone Fisheries Advisory Council, Tasmania) in January 2020, a position she held until the FAC was dissolved in 2023.

Sue was again elected to the Board of the Tasmanian Abalone Council Ltd in October 2023.
